For your convenience, we encourage you to schedule an appointment for License Services, however, we will continue to accept walk-in customers on a first-come, first-served basis. If the License Service Department reaches capacity on a given day for walk-in transactions, customers will be informed upon entering the building in St. Louis Park.

In addition to cash, AAA Minneapolis License Bureau accepts local checks, cashier's checks/money orders, and credit cards, including American Express.

*Credit card transactions will have a service fee of 2.49%.

Fill out a pre-application online for Driver's License and ID transactions to reduce your time at the counter.

Just print the confirmation page and bring it with you, along with the documents listed on the confirmation, to our office.

Driver Testing Stations

AAA does not administer driving tests. Find the closest knowledge/road testing station.

New to Minnesota

Renew Your MN Driver's License or ID Card Online

Skip the lines at the DMV! Minnesotans can now renew or replace a standard driver’s license or ID card online. Select "Apply for a Driver’s License or State ID" and follow the prompts at: drive.mn.gov.

Card holders will not be required to have a vision screening and new photo taken until the next time they renew or upgrade their license.

Exceptions for Online Renewals

You must visit a DMV office in-person if:

  • You need to change your name
  • You need to change your address
  • You need to change your signature
  • You need to change your driver’s license number
  • You want to upgrade to a REAL ID or EDL

Do I Need a REAL ID? What is an Enhanced Card?

The card type you should apply for will depend on your needs

REAL ID and Enhanced cards offer federal identification when boarding domestic flights. Enhanced cards provide the added convenience of border crossing by land and sea from Mexico and Canada. Standard Minnesota ID/Licence cards will be valid for state identification and driving even after 10/01/21, but will not be valid for federal identification or domestic flights.

REAL ID

Can be used for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities. Issued to both U.S. and non-U.S. citizens. Cannot be used as border crossing documents.

Enhanced License/ID Card

Valid for federal identification, including boarding domestic fights and access to federal facilities even after October 1, 2021. Can be used as U.S. border crossing documents by land and sea when returning from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean. Only issued to U.S. citizens.
