Friday, June 12: Amana Heritage Society Museum, Old Creamery Theater “Steel Magnolias”

7:00AM: Motorcoach will depart from Lunds & Byerlys: Back of parking lot located 3777 Park Center Blvd, St Louis Park; travel to Waterloo, IA with appropriate rest stops enroute. This afternoon arrive at Galleria de Paco. It is unlike any other dining experience anywhere in the world. It’s as if we’ve been transported to Rome for a one-of-a-kind lunch, being served under a magnificent replica of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Renowned artist, Paco Rosic, recreated Michelangelo’s masterpiece using 5,200 cans of Krylon spray paint. After lunch visit the Amana Heritage Society Museum where we’ll watch a video about the general history of Amana followed by time to explore the museum and grounds on your own. The Amana Heritage Museum is comprised of three 19th Century buildings. Noé House built in 1864, was originally a communal kitchen and later a doctor’s residence. Recently updated exhibits in the Noé House trace the history and development of Amana, include stories about Amana residents, and display the varied crafts and industries of the Inspirationists. Depicted are the original Schoolhouse built in 1870. An audio-visual presentation on Amana’s history is shown regularly in the Schoolhouse auditorium. The original washhouse/woodshed, an integral part of communal Amana, houses winemaking and gardening displays. With an intact communal-era kitchen, cooper shop, blacksmith shop, a church museum, a research library and a General Store, all are preserved for the Amana’s history. Check into the hotel with time to freshen up before tonight’s dinner and show. Hotel: Springhill Suites, Coralville, IA. Tonight, dinner will be at Ox Yoke Inn; World famous for American and German food served “Family Style”. Following dinner enjoy a show at the Old Creamery Theater, “Steel Magnolias”, (Unbreakable bonds are formed in this small-town beauty parlor... Watch as a group of strong southern women find unlikely friendships and create a community of their own, all while wearing hair curlers.) (Lunch, Dinner)

Saturday, June 13: Amana Colonies

After breakfast depart for a day of touring the Amana Colonies. The 7 Amana Villages are laid out in the manner of German Dorfleins (villages). Farms are at one end of the village, shops and factories at the other end, and homes in between. The Amana Villages form a circle with a circumference of about 20 miles. The distance between each village is 2 to 3 miles, or, as measured in the old days, two hours apart by ox cart. Remaining Faithful to a Dream! The history of the Amana Colonies, begins in 1714 in the villages of Germany and continues today in Eastern Iowa. The seven villages of the Amana Colonies represent an American dream come true; a thriving community founded by religious faith and community spirit. Evocative of another age, the streets of the Amana Colonies with their historic brick, stone and clapboard homes, their flower and vegetable gardens, their lanterns and walkways recall an Amana of yesterday. It’s a vibrant community, celebrating both its past and its future to experience. Enjoy an Amana Style lunch before departing for St. Louis Park, MN with appropriate rest and meal stops enroute 7:00PM: Approximate arrival time back in St. Louis Park.
