International Driving Permits

Your IDP is a valid form of identification in 150 countries worldwide and contains your name, photo and driver information. It translates your identification information into 10 languages — so it speaks the language even if you don't. Most countries highly recommend an International Driving Permit. AAA is the only private entity in the U.S. authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue an IDP. 

Another country cannot issue an IDP to be used in conjunction with a US driver’s license. An IDP accompanying a US driver’s license can only be issued in the USA.

Many countries require an IDP to drive legally. Fines for driving without an IDP can be quite costly. Check the countries’ requirements before travel.

IDP's are done at the AAA branch offices and the St. Louis Park Welcome Center NOT at SLP DMV license services. Travel Store locations.

IDPs are completed and ready for you in approximately 10 minutes.

You may fill out our International Driving Permit application in advance. With your application, you will also need:

  • Your valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Two ORIGINAL passport-type photos (each signed on the back) *NO photocopies and taken within the past 6 months 
  • $20.00 permit fee

*Passport photo services are also available at AAA offices!

  • Non-members: $17.10 with tax 
  • AAA Basic Members: $14.08 with tax 
  • AAA Plus and Premier Members: 1 free set per member, per year 

Mail in Your IDP Application

To receive your International Driving Permit through the mail, enclose with your completed application form:

  • A photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license
  • Two ORIGINAL passport-type photos (each signed on the back) *NO photocopies and taken within the past 6 months
  • $20.00 permit fee
  • Optional: additional U.S. funds for expedited return mail service (See USPS.com or Fedex.com for rates)

Mail these documents to the AAA office nearest you. One envelope and one check payment can be used for all parties requesting an IDP.

  • Capture the front and back of your driver’s license.
  • Pay $20 USD permit fee, $10 passport photo fee plus applicable shipping.
  • Please allow 5 business days for processing plus return shipping.
  • International Driving Permits are physically printed and mailed. Digital versions are not available.
